This team consisted of an Electrical Engineer from Aecom, an architect from EPA, a construction site manager from WBHO, and an electrical contractor from Edison Power. The electrical contractor, Edison Power, executed the installation immaculately. Conceptual design and specification is only a part of what is needed for any project to be successful. Edison Power’s team brought our concepts to reality by doing a professional installation. The lighting was delivered in stages over the several months of the construction process. The parkades were the first areas which required lighting, followed by general office lighting, stair case lighting, feature lighting and then finally, the external lighting.

A highlight of this project for us was the lighting installed in the building’s Atrium - an area that is not double, but quadruple in volume. This meant that we had to source products of premium quality and excellent efficiencies. Given this request, great care was taken in the selection of the correct luminaire for the many different applications that needed to be satisfied. We are proud to have achieved this rating for the client, by not only using energy-efficient LED lighting, but also by installing a solar water heating system, supplied by our water division.

Every luminaire supplied for this project was an LED fixture. This means that a minimum of 50% of energy was saved. This not only provided financial benefits to our client, but also reduced carbon emissions into the atmosphere by not using as much of our coal-produced electricity as traditional light sources use. LEDs also produce much less heat as compared to traditional light sources. This means that the aircon load is reduced, and by effect, reducing the size of the air conditioning system required - again, saving both capex and electricity.

“I have had great pleasure working with Magnet on this prestigious project. For example, an incandescent lamp has a colour temperature of around 2700K – 2800K, and is yellowish-white in appearance. Generally, the lower the colour temperature, the warmer and more reddish the colour of the light will be. Alternatively, the higher the colour temperature, the cooler and more blue-ish the colour of the light will be.

Illustration of a lamp with cool white (left; 4000K) and warm white (right; 2700K)

Light Spectrum
A spectrum is a term used to describe the composition of light emitted by a light source. On the other hand, daylight for example, appears cooler as it is a white light source with a higher proportion of blue and thus, a higher colour temperature.

It is the spectral distribution of the visible radiation emitted by a light source that determines both the colour rendering capability of the source and the colour appearance received when looking at the source.

These two characteristics determine the colour impression received from the lighted scene.

Colour rendering
Proper colour rendering is important in order for objects to be seen in their ‘true’ colours. We were selected by Aecom to be their lighting partner on a project for ABSA offices in uMhlanga. A key benefit placing us at the forefront of the lighting industry, is our partnership with numerous international lighting brands. As such, 9 quality brands of lighting were selected for ABSA, which was fitting for a project of this magnitude.
A professional team, from several companies, collaborated on this project. This team consisted of an Electrical Engineer from Aecom, an architect from EPA, a construction site manager from WBHO, and an electrical contractor from Edison Power. The electr...
We designed and supplied a range of lighting solutions for the Consol retail store based at Cornubia Mall in Durban.
There were several key considerations for this specific project:
Being a glass retail outlet, aesthetics was of particular significance
Lighting needed to be adjustable, in order to accommodate a dynamic showroom floor with layout and configurations changing often
Considering the multiple applications for the lighting in the store, functionality was also of utmost importance
With these drivers in mind, we took to the drawing board and designed a comprehensive solution enco...
Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore some rookie mistakes made when it comes to solar.
Click here to read last week’s article on mistake 1.
This week, we’re tackling the second common mistake of solar. Be sure to watch our quick video, and read the article below!
Mistake 2 | Confusing Off-grid and Grid-tied
Solar power allows you to generate your own energy, which means you will subsidise your use of power from the grid. People assume this means they will be going off the grid. But that's not accurate.
In reality, most people are looking for a grid-tied solar system, or a grid-tied system ...
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve uncovered factors that contribute to the quality of lighting. Factors include:
- Lighting Levels
- Spatial distribution of light
- Directionality of light

This week, we’re delving into the Colour of light...
Colour temperature
Visible radiation (light) is emitted when an object is heated. The colour of this light depends on the temperature of the object. This dependency is used to quantify the white tone of lamps. Colour temperature objectively describes the white-tone of a light sourc...
