So should they turn to a generator or an industrial uninterruptible power supply (UPS)? In many cases, the answer is both.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBy delivering both industrial UPSs and generators, electrical contractors can provide customers with a comprehensive backup power plan to enable business continuity. For the most part, customers are familiar with backup generators \u2013 a common sight in various environments, including hospitals, manufacturing factories, construction sites, and wastewater treatment plants, and others. Yet, they may not be as familiar with the benefits of an industrial UPS.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPower Outage Scenarios with a Generator\u003C/strong\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen the power goes out, an automated transfer switch or Buildings Management System activates the generator. In most cases, it takes sub 10 seconds to make the switch, and without a UPS to deliver uninterrupted power, a lot can happen in that short amount of time.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBefore the emergency power comes on in a hospital, a surgeon in an operating room can lose visibility for a few seconds, which is potentially dangerous. The switchover to generator power is also just long enough to force MRI machines and other medical equipment to reboot, a process that can take 10 or 15 minutes.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EOn a factory floor, equipment shuts down before a generator starts, forcing motors, drive systems, conveyor belts, and other machinery to recycle. In some environments, the rebooting process can take hours. In production environments for food and beverage or life sciences, entire batches of products have to be discarded because deviances from the production process may cause contamination.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EPower outages also create havoc with microprocessor chip manufacturing, which involves a combination of mechanical and chemical processes. When an outage occurs, the chips in production cannot be finished once power is restored. Instead, they have to be discarded so the whole process of manufacturing a chip can start again.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ESo while generators are crucial in all of these environments, they alone cannot prevent power interruptions that potentially cause two serious issues:\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Col\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003ELife-and-death situations, as in the case of hospital equipment\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EMonetary losses caused by interruptions to production processes and discarded products\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003C/ol\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAn\u00A0\u003Ca href=\u0022https://www.se.com/us/en/product-range/65643-square-d-easy-ups-3s/#overview\u0022\u003Eindustrial UPS\u003C/a\u003E\u00A0addresses these issues by providing a stop-gap between the unplanned power outage and when a generator can come online.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EIndustrial UPS Provides Immediate Reliable Power\u003C/strong\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EUPS systems do not replace generators. Instead, they offer a necessary complement to backup generators by keeping the power on until the generator boots. Both provide backup resilience, with\u00A0\u003Ca href=\u0022https://www.se.com/us/en/product-range/65643-square-d-easy-ups-3s/#overview\u0022\u003Eindustrial UPSs\u003C/a\u003E\u00A0delivering short-term protection and generators longer-term backup power.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile often viewed as a power backup, UPS also delivers reliability. Consider that at least 80% of UPS installations are used for power conditioning to handle sags, dips, surges, and swells in electrical currents from the grid. Maintaining a steady voltage and current helps protect equipment by preventing unnecessary shutoffs and other issues that lead to extra maintenance and overall shorter lifecycles.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EData centers, which in many cases support industrial environments, are a perfect example of the need for steady power. Even a power loss of less than a second \u2013 a blink of an eye \u2013 can lead to shutting down IT equipment and its support infrastructure for a period of time. Most advanced metering devices report data using these standards as a reference, assessing parameters against limits defined by the standards, and alerting the users when their systems are operating outside those limits.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThis works well in highly regulated environments, where electrical utilities are contractually required to provide a certain level of service to customers. But for most users, especially on the demand side (industries, commercial buildings, critical buildings, etc.), this assessment data provides only a partial picture of the overall system health. Here are a couple reasons why:\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cul\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EThe data does not provide much insight into the actual causes of power quality events.\u00A0Without that information, users are often unsuccessful when trying to prevent similar events from happening again in the future.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EThe data also does not fully capture the particularities of different electrical distribution systems.\u00A0Different electrical architectures and assets will have different levels of resilience to power quality events. If data is not analysed within this context, users will very likely be flooded with information that really is not meaningful.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003C/ul\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWith the above in mind, it\u2019s a fair expectation that advanced metering devices should not only provide data defined by the international standards, but also derive contextual actionable information that can drive tangible results and help users with what really matters:\u003C/strong\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cul\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003ETracking the health and performance of the assets\u00A0within the electrical distribution system\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EPlanning contingency \u0026amp; resilience scenarios\u00A0to ensure operations aren\u2019t disrupted when \u201Ctypical\u201D events occur\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EWhen \u201Catypical\u201D events occur, the source/cause can be quickly ascertained, hereby expediting a prompt recovery to normal operations.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003C/ul\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThe workforce dynamics\u003C/strong\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAnother important aspect that is accelerating the need for tangible results is related to the dynamics in the workforce and the work environment.\u003C/strong\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EModern workers often have many different responsibilities and do not have the time, or the need, to be as specialized in one subject matter as they were in the past. They need to juggle different priorities in a highly dynamic work environment, so they simply don\u2019t have the capacity to deal with data overload; they just need to know what to do and why. They expect intelligent devices and systems to help them in their work environment in a similar way that streaming services help them to choose meaningful content to consume.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ENot only are workers changing, but businesses of all kinds are evolving at a similar pace. Product life cycles are shorter, customers are more engaged, and information is more available than ever before.
